GUIGUISUISUI is a two piece journey into sound and performance. Man and woman, East and West, past and future, side by side blending electronic and 8-bit sounds with blues, rock, hip hop, doom, punk, noise, and ambient bliss while performing an avante garde opera featuring a number of characters: the zombie bluesman GUIGUISUISUI and immortal ninja SUSU; master of the dark arts KING NECRO and empress of the underworld PUMPKIN QUEEN; preacher and minister for the cult of greed Lord Kamemameha and high priestess of profit Lady Chakra. Meanwhile a journey through time and space plays out in the background through painstakingly detailed animations that explore the themes of life and death and rebirth. Simply put, GUIGUISUISUI is an experience.
To date there have been numerous releases under the GUIGUISUISUI name, including vinyl, tapes, CDs, and zines. The show has toured relentlessly since it’s beginnings in 2012 , with gigs in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and the Europe (UK, France,Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland). In 2016 they were presented with the ‘Band of the Year: Honorable Mention’ award at City Weekend Beijing’s annual awards show as well as being featured on the back cover of 通俗歌曲(‚tong su ge qu‘)magazine, China’s longest running rock and roll magazine.
One of the most fascinating books in 2015 is named „Die Erfindung der Roten Armee Fraktion durch einen manisch-depressiven Teenager im Sommer 1969“.
Like Franz Witzel’s ingenious novel title, one of the most fascinating albums in 2015, „Versuchungen“ by uldorox, could be described as „The invention of Techno including drum’n’bass by an experimental teenager in the years 1977 and 1978“.
It’s hard to believe that all that tricky beats and filter effects on this CD (since a tiny 1982-cassette edition vanished) only should have arisen from the feedback between a microphone and a tape recorder – but the precise documentation of the devices (Philips N8212 and N4506) makes it then but plausible.
One notices at the pieces their spontaneously improvised character, the absence of montages and overdubs, and it’s even more impressing how someone here comes deep from nowhere to the heart of musical ideas by simple playful appropriation of the medium and a refreshingly impudent DIY approach that (before or at the same time) Karlheinz Stockhausen or Throbbing Gristle in their idiom could not better have formulated – while the dominant rhythmic passages anticipate quite techno sizes with the rank of Drexciyas.
The „temptations“ of the recording device were the rite of passage into making music, followed by episodes as a bassist in various bands – so even at the Augsburger post-punk combo „Der Zustand“. Many thanks to the former bandmate Am.Eise and his label Ral-Mic Rec that these archive treasures now see the light of day again in a small reissue, but very high quality edition(23 numbered copies in embroidered felt bags!).
A wide dissemination would be desirable just as new sound labour from uldorox for us listeners. This material was so groundbreaking that it still (or only?) sounds perfectly appropriate today. There could be much more. And very good!
